Introduction:

What is an Environmental Management System (EMS)?

ISO 14001 designed the criteria for an Environmental Management System. It does not explicitly state the requirements for performance but maps out a framework that an organization can follow to set up an active and improved environment. ISO 14001:2015 is well known as a generic management system standard and is appropriate to all kinds of organizations that want to improve and manage environmental resources more effectively. ISO 14001:2015 principles are based on the renowned cycle of PDCA.

Plan: Implementation of ISO 14001 helps in the organization’s process of initial review and recommendation of products which assist all the business elements in ongoing and upcoming operations. At the time of manufacturing, environmental aspects can include both direct and indirect like used and unused raw materials. Given review help in the establishment of their environmental mission, vision, objective, target, and goals in the organization. ISO 14001 helps in the improvement of the Management processes and procedures and controls the development of the organizations. ISO 14001 enlightens the relevancy of legal requirements that can build into the policy.

Do: During this process, the organization is responsible for selecting the resources which are required to work out the control and implementation of EMS. This process includes the establishment of processes and procedures along with documentation-related control of the operation. Other procedures covered the management control over the elements as documentation, emergency preparation, and response and employee education to ensure that they can follow the important process and record them for better results. Organizational Participation and communication at every level is an important part of the implementation phase as it increases the activeness and effectiveness of being dependent on EMS. 

Check: After the “Do” stage, the next stage is “check”. In this stage, performance is measured and monitored to ensure that the organization’s environmental targets and objectives are being met. Also, internal audits are conducted to make sure that clients’ expectations are met and to ensure the process and procedures are being properly followed to maintain and monitor the environmental aspects.

Act: Next phase is the Act stage, in this stage organization observes and monitors to measure the performance and assure the environmental target and objective are being fulfilled and completed on time. Audits are executed as planned whether the environmental management system meets the client’s expectations. In addition to that, the process and procedure are being monitored and maintained in the check stage. 

Continual Improvement Process (CI)

Organization prefers ISO 14001 for continuity in the improvement of environmental performance. In addition to the reduction in the various and obvious negative impacts of the environment, which can be achieved in below ways:-

  • Enrichment: Activities, products, processes, emissions, resources, etc. managed by Implementation of implemented Environmental Management System.
  • Upgrading: Organizing the structure and framework of the environmental management system will help in dealing with environmental issues in the organization and improve them.

Continual improvement is the basic concept followed by organizations to improve all expectations that helps to deal with all environmental challenges in a measured and strategic way.
