“AI has eaten project management jobs” is a claim you now see in comment threads, and it is worth checking against data before you decide what it means for your career. This guide looks at what the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a Stanford economics brief and the Project Management Institute (PMI) actually report, says clearly what they do not prove, and ends with practical steps you can take.

Quick answer

The data reviewed here does not show artificial intelligence (AI) replacing project managers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects project management specialist employment to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, with about 76,500 openings a year, and a July 2026 Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) brief found little evidence that AI is causing significant job losses right now, while flagging possible pressure on early-career roles. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), PMI projects a shortfall of about 111,737 construction project management professionals by 2035 under its high-growth scenario. The job is changing, so staying relevant means learning to work with AI and building results and skills that tools do not replace.

US outlook7% projected growth in employment, 2025 to 2035 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)
AI and aggregate jobs“Likely small right now” (SIEPR policy brief, July 2026)
Early-career rolesSome evidence of weaker demand for young white-collar workers; causes still debated
MENA outlookProjected shortfall of about 111,737 construction project managers by 2035, high-growth scenario (PMI)
UAE8th worldwide for active PMI certifications, with 23,670 (reported by Gulf News, December 2025)
What this does not proveThat any individual job is safe, or that no one has lost a job to AI

Has AI already replaced project managers?

The data we reviewed does not show that, and it does not show the opposite with certainty either.

The July 2026 SIEPR policy brief, written by Neale Mahoney, Erika McEntarfer and Karsen Wahal, concludes that “AI’s impact on aggregate employment is likely small right now.” It reports that unemployment since 2022 rose slightly more for the least AI-exposed workers, by 0.85 points, than for the most exposed, by 0.77 points. Read the full brief on the SIEPR website.

Two honest limits apply. The brief covers the whole labor market, not project management on its own, and it says AI may create pockets of disruption that aggregate figures do not show. We also did not find a source that reports project manager layoffs caused by AI. If someone cites one, read it for the numbers, the occupation and the period before you accept it.

What does the US job data say about project management?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of project management specialists to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, which it describes as much faster than the average for all occupations.

Source: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook page for project management specialists, updated on 27 Aug 2026. Three cautions matter. These are United States figures, they are projections and not guarantees, and the page does not mention AI at all, so it neither proves nor rules out an AI effect. BLS says certification is not always required but may be beneficial.

The job is changing. The data we reviewed does not show it disappearing.

What about early-career project managers?

Early-career workers are where researchers see the clearest early signals, and the cause is still debated.

The SIEPR brief reports recent-graduate unemployment of 5.6% in early 2026, about 1.6 points above three years earlier. It cites research by Brynjolfsson, Chandar and Chen that found a notable drop in employment for early-career workers in AI-exposed occupations since 2022, and it concludes there is “some evidence that AI may be negatively affecting demand for young white-collar workers.”

The same brief warns that other factors may be at play, including rising interest rates, pandemic over-hiring and remote work, and that “isolating AI’s impact is empirically challenging.” Our reading: if you are early in your career, do not panic, but do not wait. Routine coordination work is the easiest to automate, so build visible results and judgment early. The PMP certification path is one way to show a recognized standard, and our guide on whether the PMP is still worth it in 2026 covers the trade-offs.

What does the data say about the Gulf?

Regional data points to strong demand for project professionals, with AI named as a productivity tool and not a replacement.

PMI’s report on the construction project management talent gap says MENA may need up to 330,794 construction project management professionals by 2035 under a high-growth scenario, a 32% rise on 2025. That scenario leaves a projected shortfall of 111,737 professionals, and even the low-growth scenario leaves a shortfall of more than 88,561. The report names AI, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digital twins as tools that could raise productivity, and it says MENA construction firms lag other industries in digital adoption. Read the release on Zawya.

Separately, Gulf News reported in December 2025, citing PMI, that the UAE ranks 8th worldwide with 23,670 active PMI certifications, and it linked this to demand from sectors such as smart cities, clean energy and real estate. Read the article on Gulf News.

Know the limits: the PMI report covers construction only and MENA as a whole, its figures are scenarios, and a certification count measures interest in the profession, not job openings.

What is actually changing in project management work?

The tasks are changing faster than the job, and in our view the shift is from producing documents to owning outcomes.

The table below is 3FOLD Training’s practical view, not a study result. Check any AI output before you share it.

AI tools can speed upStill needs a project manager
First drafts of status reports and meeting summariesDeciding what the sponsor really needs to hear
Brainstorming risks and schedule optionsJudging which risks matter and owning the response
Organizing data and drafting plansNegotiating scope, resources and trade-offs
Checking documents for gapsBuilding trust and resolving conflict between stakeholders

That is why the business side of the role keeps growing in importance. Our guide to PMP exam domain weighting for 2026 explains why the Business Environment domain now matters more.

How can you stay relevant as a project manager?

Stay relevant, get involved and evolve: three habits that do not depend on any single tool.

Stay relevant

  • Keep your credential and knowledge current. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential from PMI needs 60 professional development units (PDUs) every 3 years, and our guide shows what happens if you do not renew on time.
  • Follow how your industry uses AI, such as BIM and digital tools in construction.
  • Learn what the current exam content outline asks of a project manager, using the official PMI PMP page.

Get involved

  • Volunteer for projects that use AI tools, so you learn on real work.
  • Join a PMI chapter or a professional community and share what you learn.
  • Keep a record of measurable results from your projects: cost saved, time cut, scope delivered.

Evolve

  • Use AI for drafting and checking, and learn to verify what it produces.
  • Build the skills tools do not replace: stakeholder management, negotiation, leadership and business acumen.
  • Learn agile and hybrid ways of working, and build depth in one industry.

One honest note: no credential, course or checklist protects any job from change, and 3FOLD Training does not promise career outcomes. These habits improve your odds of staying valuable.

Will AI replace project managers?

The data we reviewed does not show artificial intelligence (AI) replacing project managers. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects project management specialist employment to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, and a July 2026 Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) brief found little evidence that AI is causing significant job losses right now. The work is changing, so project managers who learn to use AI tools carefully are better placed.

Is project management still a good career with AI?

Current projections say yes. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 76,500 openings a year for project management specialists over the decade to 2035, and the Project Management Institute (PMI) projects a shortfall of about 111,737 construction project management professionals in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by 2035 under its high-growth scenario. Projections are not guarantees, and individual results depend on skills, industry and location.

Which project management tasks can AI help with?

In 3FOLD Training’s view, AI tools can speed up first drafts of status reports, meeting summaries and risk or schedule brainstorming. Judgment, stakeholder trust, negotiation and accountability for the outcome still sit with the project manager. This is a practical view, not a study result, and you should always check AI output before you share it.

Is the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification still worth it with AI?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) shows that you meet a recognized standard in people, process and business environment skills. It does not protect any job from change, and no provider can promise a career result. 3FOLD Training explains the trade-offs in its guide on whether the PMP is still worth it in 2026.

Are project managers in demand in the UAE and the Gulf?

Regional data points to strong demand. PMI projects a shortfall of about 111,737 construction project management professionals in MENA by 2035 under its high-growth scenario, and Gulf News reported in December 2025 that the UAE ranks 8th worldwide with 23,670 active PMI certifications. The first figure covers construction only and the second counts certification holders, not job openings.

What skills should project managers learn to work with AI?

Learn to use AI tools on real work and to verify what they produce, and keep building the skills AI does not replace: stakeholder management, negotiation, leadership and business acumen. Add agile and hybrid ways of working, and build depth in one industry. Keep your credential and your measurable results current.

How many project management openings are there each year?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports about 76,500 openings per year, on average, for project management specialists over 2025 to 2035. It reports 1,094,300 jobs in 2025 and a projected change of 73,200 by 2035. These are United States figures, and openings include replacement needs as well as growth.

Should early-career project managers worry about AI?

Early-career workers are where researchers see the clearest early signals. The July 2026 SIEPR brief reports recent-graduate unemployment of 5.6% in early 2026 and notes research finding a drop in employment for early-career workers in AI-exposed occupations since 2022, but it also says other factors such as interest rates, pandemic over-hiring and remote work may be at play. Building visible results and a credential early is a sensible response.
