AACE CCP Eligibility Requirements: Who Can Apply for the CCP Exam?
You qualify for the AACE Certified Cost Professional exam through one of two routes: 8 years of industry-related experience, or 4 years of experience plus a 4-year industry-related degree. Your exact job title does not decide this — your actual duties do, and they need to be verified in the right way.
Thinking about taking the AACE Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam? Before you start preparing, the first thing to check is whether you meet the AACE CCP eligibility requirements.
The CCP is designed for experienced professionals working in cost engineering, estimating, cost control, project controls and related areas. AACE describes the CCP as a professional credential for practitioners who can apply Total Cost Management principles in project and program environments.
If you are based in the UAE and considering the certification, here is what you need to know before applying.
What are the AACE CCP eligibility requirements?
According to the current AACE CCP Candidate Handbook, you need to meet one of these two requirements:
- Option 1 — Industry experience: 8 years of industry-related experience
- Option 2 — Experience + education: 4 years of industry-related experience + 4 years of an industry-related degree
An industry-related degree can substitute for up to four years of the required professional experience. The important point is that your experience needs to be industry-related. AACE certifications are competency-based, so relevant professional experience is a major part of the application.
If you are unsure whether your experience qualifies, it is better to check before submitting your application. You can contact 3FOLD through the course enquiry form before proceeding.
What experience counts for the AACE CCP?
Your experience should be relevant to areas such as cost engineering, cost estimating, cost control, project controls, planning and scheduling, project management, commercial or contracts management, performance measurement, and Total Cost Management.
Your exact job title does not necessarily tell the whole story. What matters is whether your actual responsibilities and experience are relevant.
For example, a quantity surveyor, cost engineer, project controls engineer or cost manager may have relevant experience, but the application still needs to be supported with appropriate employment verification.
What documents do you need for CCP eligibility?
AACE requires verification of your education and professional experience.
For education
You need to provide a copy of your diploma/degree or transcripts. If your documents are not in English, AACE requires an official English translation.
For employment experience
Your employment verification should include dates of employment, job title, and a brief description of your duties and responsibilities. The verification must come from your employer.
Can I submit my CV for AACE CCP experience verification?
No, this is one of the most common mistakes candidates make.
AACE specifically states that a CV, résumé, application, job description, employment contract/offer, or another organisation's certification cannot be used as employment verification.
You can ask your employer to provide an appropriate experience/employment letter on company letterhead, or use the official AACE Certification Application Employment Verification Form.
The AACE form asks the employer to verify employment dates, position, employment status, and a brief description of the employee's duties and responsibilities. It also includes the company representative's contact details and signature.
What if my previous employer is no longer available?
AACE notes that, in some cases, your current employer may verify previous employment if they conducted a background check as part of your hiring process. Self-employed candidates need to follow AACE's Self-Employment Policy.
If you are unsure what documentation to provide, check with AACE or speak with 3FOLD Training before submitting your application.
Do I need to be an AACE member to apply for CCP?
No. AACE membership is not mandatory to take an AACE certification exam. However, AACE members receive benefits such as discounted certification exam fees and access to certain technical resources.
Do I need a CCP preparation course to apply?
No. AACE does not require candidates to complete a preparation course before taking the CCP exam. However, eligibility and exam preparation are two different things.
Once you know you qualify, you still need to prepare for the exam itself. If you are looking for a structured approach, you can read our AACE CCP Study Plan: How to Prepare for the Exam.
