Is the CCQM overpowering the CMQ/OE® in recognition and value?
Two ASQ credentials, two different jobs. Here is what the CMQ/OE® has established, and how to choose by career goal instead of popularity.

You may have heard that the Certified Construction Quality Manager (CCQM) is gaining ground on the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE®), both from the American Society for Quality (ASQ). We would not frame it that way: a certification does not lose value because another one becomes more visible.
No. The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) and the ASQ Certified Construction Quality Manager (CCQM) serve different roles, so neither overpowers the other. The CMQ/OE is a broad management credential across industries, with roots in ASQ’s Certified Quality Manager program of 1995. The CCQM is a construction-specific credential that ASQ introduced in 2024. The right choice depends on your career goal, your experience and your target market, not on which credential is more visible.
| Point | CMQ/OE® | CCQM |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Broad management credential across industries | Quality management in construction |
| Origin | Evolved from ASQ’s Certified Quality Manager program, developed in 1995 | Introduced by ASQ in 2024 |
| Experience | 10 years | 8 years |
| Decision-making | At least 5 years | At least 3 years |
| Exam | 180 questions (165 scored), 4 hours 18 minutes, open-book | 165 questions (150 scored), 4 hours 18 minutes, open-book |
| Accreditation stated on ASQ’s page | ANAB under ISO 17024 | Not stated |
CMQ/OE is a registered mark of the American Society for Quality. 3FOLD Training prepares learners for the CMQ/OE exam; ASQ examines and certifies. ASQ sets and can change the rules, so confirm them on the official CMQ/OE page and the CCQM page.
Is the CCQM overtaking the CMQ/OE® in recognition?
No, and the two are not substitutes.
Both credentials come from ASQ, and they answer different questions. The CCQM is for professionals who ensure construction projects meet quality standards across the project lifecycle. The CMQ/OE is for professionals who lead and champion process improvement in any industry, with emphasis on leadership, strategic planning, measurement, risk and organizational improvement. ASQ publishes no ranking of its certifications by recognition, so this article does not claim one. What it can show is the record each credential has built.

What has the CMQ/OE® established over time?
A long, published record and a demanding entry standard.
| Year or status | Fact |
|---|---|
| 1968 | ASQ holds its first certification examinations, for quality engineers. |
| 1995 | The Certified Quality Manager program is developed. The CMQ/OE evolved from it. |
| Today | The CMQ/OE program is accredited by ANAB under ISO 17024, and ASQ has members and customers in more than 130 countries. |
| Entry standard | 10 years of experience, at least 5 in a decision-making position, less any education waiver. |
| Every 3 years | CMQ/OE holders recertify, which keeps the credential current. |
ANAB is the accreditation board of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and ISO 17024 is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for bodies that certify people. Check each fact on the ASQ history page, the recertification page and the CMQ/OE fact sheet (PDF), or read the 2026 Body of Knowledge (PDF). For application steps, see our guide to CMQ/OE exam dates and scheduling.

How do you decide which credential is worth it?
Start with your career goal, and test every certification against five points.
- Career goal. Where do you want this certification to take you?
- Current experience. Does it build on what you already do?
- The role you want next. Which credentials, knowledge and experience does that position actually ask for?
- Recognition in your target market. A credential may be well regarded in one industry or region and less familiar in another.
- Value beyond the certificate. Will the knowledge help you decide better, lead teams, improve processes or manage quality?
Your goal changes the assessment. These are the credentials professionals commonly assess for each goal:
| Career goal | Credentials worth assessing |
|---|---|
| Quality management and organizational excellence | CMQ/OE® |
| QMS leadership, operations or continuous improvement | CMQ/OE®, plus Six Sigma belts for process improvement |
| Quality engineering | ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) |
| Auditing and compliance | ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) or CQI IRCA lead auditor courses |
| Six Sigma and process improvement | CSSGB® or CSSBB® |
| Construction quality leadership | CCQM |
Is another certification always the answer?
No. Sometimes the better move is experience, a new responsibility, a project, leadership exposure or deeper expertise in your field. Before asking “Which certification is more valuable?”, ask “Valuable for what?” For an experienced leader whose goal is cross-industry quality and organizational leadership, the CMQ/OE® has an established name and a clear fit. Read our CMQ/OE 2026 exam changes guide and our result verification explainer to see what the credential involves.

For planning only. This is not an ASQ tool, and it does not predict exam results or job outcomes.
The check opens with a candidate who has a clear goal, fitting experience and a useful syllabus, but has not checked the next role’s requirements or the target market. Those two are what to verify before enrolling.
CMQ/OE vs CCQM: frequently asked questions
Is the ASQ CCQM better than the CMQ/OE?
No. The ASQ Certified Construction Quality Manager (CCQM) and the ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) serve different roles. The CCQM is specific to construction quality, while the CMQ/OE is a broad management credential across industries, so the better choice depends on your career goal and experience.
What is the difference between the ASQ CMQ/OE and CCQM?
The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) requires 10 years of experience, including 5 in a decision-making position, and its exam has 180 questions. The ASQ Certified Construction Quality Manager (CCQM) requires 8 years, including 3 in a decision-making position, and its exam has 165 questions. Both exams are open-book and allow 4 hours 18 minutes.
Which ASQ certification is more recognized, CMQ/OE or CCQM?
ASQ does not publish a recognition ranking of its certifications. The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) has the longer record, since it evolved from ASQ's Certified Quality Manager program of 1995, while the ASQ Certified Construction Quality Manager (CCQM) was introduced in 2024. Recognition varies by industry and region, so check job postings in your target market.
Do I need a Quality job title to take the ASQ CMQ/OE exam?
No. The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) requires 10 years of experience in its Body of Knowledge, including 5 years in a decision-making position. ASQ states that a decision-making position may or may not include management or supervisory positions, so the requirement rests on your authority over projects or processes, not your title.
Is the ASQ CMQ/OE certification accredited?
Yes. ASQ states that the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) certification program is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under the ISO 17024 standard. ANSI is the American National Standards Institute and ISO is the International Organization for Standardization.
