If you already know you want the LEED AP BD+C, a combined course sounds like a shortcut. But is it actually faster than taking the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C courses separately? The honest answer is more interesting than yes or no. This guide explains what the combo path really changes, what sets your timeline, and how to choose.

Quick answer

Not in teaching hours. According to 3FOLD Training’s course pages, the combined path is the 14-hour LEED Green Associate course plus the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C course, which is 35 hours in total. What the combo changes is continuity: you plan once and move from one phase to the next without a gap. Your real timeline is set by your study pace and your Green Associate exam date, because the standalone LEED AP exam depends on holding the Green Associate credential.

Short answerThe combo path is not shorter in teaching hours, but it can be smoother
Course hours14 for Green Associate plus 21 for LEED AP BD+C, 35 in total, per 3FOLD course pages
Exam orderHold the LEED Green Associate credential before the standalone LEED AP with Specialty exam
Waiting periodNo required wait after the Green Associate, according to 3FOLD’s guide
What the combo addsOne plan, continuous momentum and the same team across both phases
What separate courses addFlexibility to pause, to choose a specialty later and to spread the study load
Combined examA different thing, set by USGBC and GBCI where available, so confirm on the exam page
What decides your speedYour study pace, your Green Associate exam date and your specialty choice

Is the combo path faster than taking the two courses separately?

The combo path is not faster in teaching hours, but it can be faster in practice if it removes the gaps between courses.

The 14-hour Green Associate phase and the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C phase add up to the same 35 hours whether you book them together or apart. What differs is how the time is used. Booking separately means two decisions, two start dates and a pause in between, and some candidates lose momentum in that pause. Booking the combo means one plan. The difference is mostly about steady progress, not about fewer hours.

It is also important to separate the course from the exam. Whatever you choose to study, the standalone LEED AP with Specialty exam depends on the Green Associate credential, as our guide on LEED AP training before the Green Associate explains. The table below summarizes six points candidates ask about most.

What does the combined LEED GA + AP BD+C path include?

The combined path includes the 14-hour Green Associate phase and the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C phase, delivered one after the other with practice and mock exam support.

How is the combined path structured?

3FOLD Training’s course pages describe two phases in sequence. The Green Associate phase comes first, and the LEED AP BD+C phase follows. Each phase has its own learning resources, so you can see where one ends and the next begins.

What support comes with it?

The courses are delivered with Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) and Learning Management System (LMS) resources, domain-by-domain practice and full-length mock exams. Check the current schedule and delivery format on the combined course page and the course calendar, because batches change.

The combo does not shorten the syllabus. It shortens the gap between the two halves.

What actually sets your LEED timeline?

Your timeline is set by your study pace, your Green Associate exam date and the exam eligibility rules, not by how the courses are packaged.

The USGBC LEED v5 exam information states that candidates who earned the Green Associate credential, through either the LEED v4 or LEED v5 exam, are qualified to take the LEED AP with Specialty exam. That means the Green Associate exam is the gate. 3FOLD Training’s guide on LEED Green Associate to LEED AP in v5 adds that there is no required waiting period after passing it, so you can move on as soon as you are ready.

Two other points matter. First, a combined exam is a different thing from a combined course, and it is set by USGBC and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) where available, so check the exam information page for what is currently offered. Second, a certificate of completion from a course is not a credential, as our guide on the difference between a training certificate and a credential explains.

See what’s included

When should you choose the combo, and when should you separate?

Choose the combo when you already know you want the LEED AP BD+C and want steady momentum, and choose separate courses when you want flexibility.

When does the combo suit you?

It suits candidates who are sure about BD+C, who work on or near design and construction projects, and who tend to lose momentum between separate courses. One plan removes the decision point in the middle.

When do separate courses suit you?

Separate courses suit candidates who are still deciding on a specialty, who want to pass the Green Associate exam and pause, or who need to spread the study load. Our guide on LEED training course versus self-study helps if you are also weighing a course at all.

How do you decide between the two routes?

Decide by checking your goal, your specialty, your schedule and your study habits, then confirm the current rules with USGBC and GBCI.

  • Check your goal: do you want the LEED Green Associate only, or the LEED AP BD+C as well?
  • Check your specialty: does BD+C match the projects you work on?
  • Check your schedule: can you keep up one continuous plan?
  • Check your habits: do you lose momentum when there is a gap between courses?
  • Confirm eligibility and exam options on the USGBC LEED v5 exam information before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is the LEED GA + AP BD+C combo path faster than taking the two courses separately?

Not in teaching hours. According to 3FOLD Training’s course pages, the combined path is the 14-hour LEED Green Associate course plus the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C course, 35 hours in total. The benefit is continuity and structure, because you plan once and move from one phase to the next with the same team.

How many hours is the combined LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C course?

3FOLD Training’s course pages list 35 hours in total, made up of 14 hours for the LEED Green Associate phase and 21 hours for the LEED AP BD+C phase. Candidates should confirm the current schedule and format on the course page and the course calendar.

Can you take the LEED AP BD+C course before passing the Green Associate exam?

Study and training are possible earlier, but registration for the standalone LEED AP with Specialty exam depends on holding the LEED Green Associate credential. 3FOLD Training’s guide explains that training participation and official exam eligibility are two different things.

What does the U.S. Green Building Council say about eligibility for the LEED AP exam?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) states that candidates who earned the LEED Green Associate credential, through either the LEED v4 or LEED v5 exam, are qualified to take the LEED AP with Specialty exam. Candidates should confirm current details on the USGBC exam information page.

Do you have to wait after the Green Associate exam before the LEED AP exam?

3FOLD Training’s guide on moving from LEED Green Associate to LEED AP in v5 states that there is no requirement to wait a particular amount of time after passing the Green Associate. Candidates should confirm current rules with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).

Is a combined exam the same as a combined course?

No. A combined course is a training offer from a provider, while a combined exam is an exam option set by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) where available. Check the USGBC exam information page for what is currently offered.

When does the combo path make sense?

It makes sense when you already know you want the LEED AP BD+C, you want one plan with continuous momentum, and you work on or near design and construction projects. It also suits candidates who tend to lose momentum between separate courses.

When is it better to take the two courses separately?

Taking them separately can suit candidates who are still deciding on a specialty, who want to pass the Green Associate exam and pause, or who need to spread the study load over a longer period. The LEED AP specialty should match the type of project work you do.

What does a LEED AP specialty cover compared with the Green Associate?

The LEED Green Associate covers broad foundational knowledge of the rating system, while a LEED AP specialty such as BD+C goes deeper for a type of work, in this case building design and construction. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) lists different reference documents for each exam.

Which study materials does USGBC list for the LEED AP BD+C exam?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) lists the LEED v5 Reference Guide for Building Design and Construction, February 2026 Edition, together with Foundations of LEED, the Guide to Certification: Commercial and the Addenda Database. Candidates should confirm the current list on the USGBC exam information page.

Which LEED exams are based on LEED v5?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) states that the LEED Green Associate, LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP O+M and LEED AP ID+C exams have been updated to LEED v5. The LEED AP ND and LEED AP Homes exams continue to be based on LEED v4, so candidates should check the USGBC exam information page for current status.
