What does the domain cover?

AACEI’s CCP Examination Blueprint (May 2026) lists 27 tasks under Managing Project Costs, labelled 1.A to 1.AA. We group them into 7 themes to make them easier to study. The grouping is ours, and the task wording is AACEI’s.

ThemeBlueprint tasks
Historical data and benchmarking1.A Research historical database; 1.B Develop analogous data sets (for example benchmarking, validating estimates, cost comparisons); 1.AA Compile historical data
Cost estimates1.C Develop summary-level cost estimates; 1.D Review detailed project estimates; 1.E Prepare rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimates; 1.F Verify basis of cost estimates; 1.G Analyze cost estimates
Budgets and baselines1.H Work with estimators to establish baseline budget; 1.I Develop cost budget baselines (for example time phased); 1.J Confirm change orders are included in baseline; 1.K Monitor Budget-at-Completion (BAC); 1.L Forecast funding requirements; 1.M Control operating budgets; 1.N Create budgets; 1.O Finalize budgets
Cost system and current data1.P Adhere to cost system governance requirements; 1.Q Organize current data

Cost drivers, changes and resources1.V Identify/Evaluate cost drivers; 1.W Evaluate impact of change orders; 1.X Evaluate resource allocation/utilization
Forecasting1.Y Conduct cost forecasting; 1.Z Calculate Estimate-at-Completion (EAC) updates

1. Historical data and benchmarking

These tasks are about using the cost of past projects as a reference. Benchmarking compares a project’s costs with comparable work, so you can test whether an estimate or budget is reasonable.

2. Cost estimates

These tasks run from rough order of magnitude (ROM) and summary-level estimates to reviewing detailed estimates. You also verify the basis of an estimate and analyze it, so know how an estimate develops as the project is defined.

3. Budgets and baselines

This is the largest theme, with 8 tasks. A cost budget baseline is the approved budget that actual cost is measured against, and the tasks include confirming that change orders are in the baseline and monitoring Budget-at-Completion (BAC).

4. Cost system and current data

These 2 tasks cover following cost system governance requirements and organizing current data. They are short, but every later tracking task depends on clean data.

Want a structured way to cover every topic? See what the preparation program includes.

5. Tracking and validating costs

Actual and accrued costs are costs already incurred or recognized, and committed costs are costs agreed through contracts and orders but not yet incurred. This theme also asks you to validate invoices and work-in-place accruals.

6. Cost drivers, changes and resources

These tasks ask you to identify and evaluate cost drivers, assess the impact of change orders and evaluate resource allocation and utilization.

7. Forecasting and EAC updates

The estimate at completion (EAC) is a forecast of the total cost of the project when it finishes. Expect questions that ask you to conduct a forecast and calculate EAC updates from the data you are given.

Where does it sit in the 2026 blueprint?

Managing Project Costs is the largest of 6 question domains, and a seventh domain, Communication, is assessed through a memo. The table shows the weightings and task counts from the blueprint, and the multiple-choice counts from AACEI’s CCP details page.

DomainBlueprint weightingBlueprint tasksMultiple-choice questions
Managing Project Costs36%2743
Interface with Other Disciplines24%1828
Conduct Performance Measurement and Analysis17%1320
Create Reports and Documentation11%813
Inform the Risk Management Process7%69
Support and Inform the Scheduling Process5%46

The domain is weighted 36% against 24% for the next largest, and it has 43 questions against 28, about 1.5 times as many. AACEI states that an overall average of 70% is needed to pass and that the final result averages the scores of all 7 domains.

The pass rule applies to the overall average of all 7 domains.

Does a strong cost domain cover a weak one?

It can offset one, since the result is an average, but you cannot rely on it. AACEI does not state a separate pass mark per domain, so plan to bring every domain up, including the small ones.

Which themes should you revise first?

Tick each theme where you can already work through the blueprint tasks confidently. The checker counts them and lists the ones to revise first.

Managing Project Costs theme check

For planning only. Tick the themes where you can already work through the blueprint tasks confidently, and the checker shows what to revise first.

About this example: it starts with the first 3 themes ticked, so the result shows the other 4 as the ones to revise first.

How do the exam rules affect this domain?

The exam is closed book, with onscreen formula sheets and a permitted calculator, so you must understand the cost logic and not only recall it. This matters most for forecasting and EAC updates, where you are likely to calculate and interpret figures.

What can you use during the exam?

AACEI states that onscreen formula sheets are available and that a battery-operated calculator of any style is permitted. The testing center does not provide the calculator, so bring your own if you sit at a center. Our guide to the CCP exam format covers the rest of the structure.

How do you study this domain?

Work through the 7 themes in order, then test yourself on each. Our CCP exam preparation program is self-paced, with 40 on-demand video lessons, a complete CCP study guide, 3 full-length mock exams, and a formula sheet and glossary, so you can learn each theme and then practise it.

What should you practise?

Our AACE CCP study plan shows how to structure the weeks, and our CCP study guide explains what to study. Use the CCP sample exam questions to test yourself and the CCP mock exam guide to practise a full paper.
