CCP Recertification: Requirements and How to Maintain Your Credential
Your CCP® certification is not a one-time achievement. AACE requires professional-level certifications, including the CCP, to be renewed every three years. Here is exactly what recertification involves, what your two options are, and what happens if you miss a deadline.
Passing the CCP® exam is not the end of the process. As Per AACE International's own Candidate Handbook (revised 22 June 2026), professional-level certifications, including the CCP, must be renewed every three years through a process called recertification. Miss it without acting, and you could lose the right to use your hard-earned designation.
Everything below is drawn directly from the current Candidate Handbook. Where a specific figure, such as the exact number of CEUs required, is not published in the handbook itself, we say so and point you to AACE's own website rather than guessing.
Why does CCP recertification matter?
Recertification exists to verify that you are maintaining your competency in the body of knowledge, not just that you passed an exam once. AACE recommends you start planning for it the day you receive your certification, rather than waiting until your expiration date approaches.
It is worth noting that recertification only applies to professional- and expertise-level certifications. Technician-level certifications, such as the CCT, are not eligible for recertification at all.
How often do you need to recertify?
Every three years. That three-year clock starts from the date on your certification, so your recertification deadline is fixed from day one. Planning early gives you the most flexibility in how you meet the requirement.
What are your two recertification options?
AACE gives CCP holders two distinct paths to recertify. You choose the one that fits your situation.
Recertification by CEUs
This is the most popular option. You accumulate a set number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over your three-year certification period, earned through activities such as professional development or volunteer service.
The handbook does not publish the exact number of CEUs required per cycle. For the current figure, see AACE's own Recertification by CEUs page. A practical habit: enter your CEUs into your AACE profile as you earn them, rather than trying to reconstruct three years of activity at once.
Recertification by Exam
If you choose to recertify by exam, you must take and pass the CCP exam again before the last day of your grace period. If you have not accumulated CEUs.
What happens if you are audited?
Most CEUs claimed for Recertification by CEUs do not require you to upload verification upfront. However, AACE states that approximately 10% of certificants are randomly selected for audit. If you are selected, you must upload verification for every single CEU claimed in your application, not just a sample.
The practical takeaway is simple: keep your verification documents, even if you never end up needing them.
What is the grace period?
AACE builds a six-month grace period into every certificant's cycle. If you do not complete your recertification application by your expiration date, your certification remains active during that six-month window, and you are not penalized for the delay.
There is one important restriction: you cannot claim CEUs earned during the grace period toward the recertification that is currently due. Any CEUs you earn during your grace period count toward your next recertification cycle instead, so hold onto that documentation for later.
What happens if you do not recertify in time?
If you do not accumulate enough CEUs and do not pass a recertification exam within your grace period, you fail to recertify, and you may no longer use the CCP designation.
Getting recertified after that point is not a shortcut back in. You must begin an entirely new certification application and resubmit all standard requirements, such as verification documents, to obtain clearance to sit for the exam again. Upon passing, you receive a brand-new certificate number with a new certification date, not a continuation of your old one.
