Is the PMBOK® Guide 8th Edition the main material for the PMP® exam?
The main PMP preparation material is PMI’s official course, not a book. Here is what that course is, what the PMBOK Guide is for, why it is supplementary and how members get it.
In this guide
When the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition was released, many candidates asked the same thing: is this the book I must study for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam? If it is not the main material, what is? This guide answers both questions using what the Project Management Institute (PMI) itself says.
Quick answer
No. The main PMP preparation material is the official PMI course material, delivered through PMI’s learning platform when you enrol with a PMI Authorized Training Partner. The PMBOK Guide 8th Edition and practice guides such as the Agile Practice Guide are supplementary reference publications that deepen what the course teaches. PMI marks the PMBOK Guide as free for members. The July 2026 Exam Content Outline (ECO) is the blueprint every exam question is mapped to.
| Main learning material | Official PMI course material, delivered through PMI’s learning platform (LMS) by an Authorized Training Partner |
| Exam blueprint | July 2026 Exam Content Outline: 3 domains, 26 tasks |
| PMBOK Guide 8th Edition | Supplementary reference. Listed by PMI with a publication date of November 2025, 408 pages |
| Practice guide on PMI’s PMP page | Agile Practice Guide |
| Member access | PMBOK Guide marked “Free for Members” by PMI |
| Exam format | 180 questions (170 scored), 240 minutes |
Is the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition the main material for the PMP exam?
No. The PMBOK Guide is an important PMI reference, but it is not where your PMP preparation starts.
Many candidates assume that because the PMBOK Guide is PMI’s flagship book, the exam must be written from it. PMI’s position is different. The July 2026 PMP Exam Content Outline says the exam is not based on one book, and that the ECO differs noticeably from the PMBOK Guide. Exam questions are mapped to the ECO, which lists the domains, tasks and weights that are tested, and the exam checks whether you can apply good practice to real situations. No chapter of any book is the exam.
That raises the fair follow-up question: if the PMBOK Guide is not the main material, what is?

What is the official PMP course material from PMI?
It is PMI-developed training, aligned to the ECO and delivered through PMI’s learning management system (LMS) when you enrol with an Authorized Training Partner.
PMI’s PMP preparation page describes an official prep course that was developed and validated by PMP certification holders, and says PMI Authorized Training Partner courses use PMI-developed training that meets the 35-hour education requirement and aligns with the exam content. This is the official, structured core of your preparation. In the course you work through lessons organized around the ECO and practice with mock exams, in an order designed to take you from the basics to exam-day judgment.
| Part of your preparation | What it does |
|---|---|
| Official PMI course material (LMS) | Teaches the content in a clear order, aligned to the ECO |
| Exam Content Outline | Shows what is tested: 3 domains, 26 tasks, with weights |
| Mock exams | Build timing and show where your weak spots are |
| PMBOK Guide and practice guides | Supplementary reference for deeper reading |

What is the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition all about?
It is PMI’s flagship standard for project management, listed with a publication date of November 2025.
PMI describes the Eighth Edition as a 408-page standard that includes The Standard for Project Management, covering standards, principles and practices for managing projects across different approaches and environments. It is a body of knowledge for working project professionals, not an exam syllabus. Read the details on PMI’s own PMBOK Guide page.
| Element | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Principles (6) | Adopt a holistic view, focus on value, embed quality, be an accountable leader, integrate sustainability and build an empowered culture |
| Focus areas (5) | Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing |
| Performance domains (7) | Governance, scope, schedule, finance, stakeholders, resources and risk |
| Processes | Process guidance returns in an evolved, non-prescriptive way, within each performance domain |
| Added coverage | Appendices on artificial intelligence, project management offices and procurement |
Are the PMBOK performance domains the same as the exam domains?
No, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion. The PMBOK Guide 8 has seven performance domains, such as governance and risk. The exam has three domains: People, Process and Business Environment. Our guide on PMP exam domain weighting in 2026 explains how much each exam domain carries.
Why is the PMBOK Guide called supplementary material?
Because it supports your preparation but does not set its order, scope or weight.
PMI lists the PMBOK Guide and the Agile Practice Guide among its study materials on the PMP preparation page, and describes its publications as reference materials rather than a required cover-to-cover reading list. PMI does not call them “supplementary” in so many words, but that is how they work in practice, for three reasons.
- They are references, not a syllabus. They explain concepts in depth for working professionals, while the ECO and the official course decide what you are tested on and how much each area carries.
- They cover more than the exam asks. The PMBOK Guide has 7 performance domains and 408 pages. The exam has 3 domains and 26 tasks.
- The Agile Practice Guide adds depth for one area. It is a PMI practice guide on agile approaches, life cycles and team practices. It supports the agile and hybrid content of the exam but is not a replacement for the course.
Think of them as the reference shelf beside your course. When a lesson or a practice question leaves you unsure, you open the matching section, read it, and return to practice.

Can you get the PMBOK Guide when you become a PMI member?
Yes. PMI marks the PMBOK Guide as “Free for Members” on its PMP certification page.
That means joining PMI gives you access to the PMBOK Guide without buying a separate copy. PMI also lists the Agile Practice Guide on the same page as a PMI practice guide. Access terms and formats can change, and practice guides may be handled differently from the flagship standard, so check the PMI Store or your membership account for the current terms of each publication. Members also use PMI’s membership to access other resources, so decide on membership based on the full benefits, not only on the book.
Using a member copy is a convenience, not a requirement. You can prepare well with the official course and the ECO alone, and add the references when your practice results show a gap.
Study resource finder
For planning only. Pick what you need right now and see which resource to reach for first.
The preloaded example is a learner who does not understand why a practice answer is correct. The finder points to the PMBOK Guide as a reference for that weak topic, and tells the learner to return to practice straight afterwards.
How should you use the PMBOK Guide when you prepare?
Use it as a reference to deepen weak topics, after you have mapped your study to the ECO and started your course.
- Start with the ECO. List its 26 tasks and rate your confidence in each one.
- Follow the official PMI course material in the order it is taught, and keep notes against the ECO tasks.
- When a practice question exposes a weak topic, look it up in the matching PMBOK performance domain, or in the Agile Practice Guide for agile topics, and read the key concepts.
- Go straight back to scenario practice, so the reading turns into judgment.
- Do not read all 408 pages before you practice.
This sequence is 3FOLD’s study advice, not a PMI rule. Mistakes candidates make with it
- Treating the PMBOK Guide as the whole exam and skipping the course.
- Reading it cover to cover before touching a single practice question.
- Treating the 7 performance domains as the 3 exam domains.
- Memorizing processes instead of practicing judgment in scenarios.
- Studying from summaries of any edition without checking them against the July 2026 ECO.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition the main material for the PMP exam?
No. The main learning material is the official Project Management Institute (PMI) course material delivered through PMI’s learning platform when you enrol with a PMI Authorized Training Partner. The PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition is a reference publication that supports it. The Exam Content Outline (ECO) is the blueprint every Project Management Professional (PMP) exam question is mapped to.
What is the official PMP exam course material from PMI?
It is PMI-developed training aligned to the Exam Content Outline (ECO), delivered through PMI’s learning management system (LMS) when you enrol with a PMI Authorized Training Partner. It includes lessons that follow the ECO and practice exams. PMI sets the terms of access, so check the details with your training partner before you enrol.
Why is the PMBOK Guide called supplementary material?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) treats the PMBOK Guide and its practice guides as reference publications, not as a required cover-to-cover reading list. They explain concepts in depth, while the official course and the Exam Content Outline (ECO) set the order and scope of your Project Management Professional (PMP) preparation. They supplement the course; they do not replace it.
Which practice guide goes with the PMBOK Guide for the PMP exam?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) lists the Agile Practice Guide beside the PMBOK Guide on its Project Management Professional (PMP) preparation page. It gives guidance on agile approaches, life cycles and team practices, which supports the agile and hybrid content in the exam. Treat it as a reference in the same way as the PMBOK Guide.
Is the PMBOK Guide free for PMI members?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) marks the PMBOK Guide as free for members on its Project Management Professional (PMP) certification page, so joining PMI gives you access to it. Access terms can change, and practice guides may be handled differently, so check the PMI Store for the current terms for each publication before you plan your study around them.
Do you have to read the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition to pass the PMP exam?
No. The Project Management Institute (PMI) describes its publications as reference materials rather than a required cover-to-cover reading list. Use the PMBOK Guide to deepen topics where your practice results are weak, alongside the Exam Content Outline, your course and full-length practice exams. No material guarantees a pass.
Are the PMBOK performance domains the same as the PMP exam domains?
No. The PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition from the Project Management Institute (PMI) has seven performance domains: governance, scope, schedule, finance, stakeholders, resources and risk. The Project Management Professional (PMP) exam is built on three domains in the July 2026 Exam Content Outline: People, Process and Business Environment.
What is new in the PMBOK Guide 8th Edition?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) lists it with a publication date of November 2025 as a 408-page standard that includes The Standard for Project Management. It has six principles, seven performance domains and process guidance presented in an evolved, non-prescriptive way, with added coverage of artificial intelligence, project management offices and procurement.
