Flashcards are the right tool for one part of this exam — the vocabulary, the numbers and the confusable pairs. They are the wrong tool for the larger part, which asks you to apply ideas rather than recite them. Used well they cost five minutes a day and reliably convert recognition into recall. Used badly they become a way of feeling productive without learning anything.
Here is what belongs on a card, what does not, how to review them, and 45 cards to start with.
What flashcards are good for
Anything where there is one short right answer and no reasoning involved:
- Definitions. What is a brownfield? What is passive survivability?
- Acronyms. EPD, HPD, VMT, SRI, IPM, DCV.
- Numbers. Certification thresholds, domain weightings, exam mechanics, CE hours.
- Confusable pairs. The single highest-value use, because they are exactly what the exam probes and exactly what half-memory gets wrong.
- Ordered lists. The waste hierarchy, the mobility hierarchy, the efficiency-first water order.
What they are bad for
Anything requiring judgement. A great many questions describe a situation and ask you to apply an idea to it — which strategy suits this project, which decision comes first, why one option is better than another. No card teaches that.
The failure mode is real and common: a candidate drills four hundred cards, knows every definition cold, and still fails, because the exam asked them to use the ideas rather than recite them. Flashcards are a supplement to understanding, never a substitute for it. Build the understanding from the domain guides and practice questions, then use cards to make the vocabulary automatic.
Five rules for writing a good card
1.One idea per card. If the back has three bullet points, it is three cards.
2.Write the back in your own words. Copying a definition verbatim means you can recognise it, not produce it. Rephrasing forces you to understand it first, which is where most of the value is.
3.Make pairs into one card, not two. A card asking “flush rate or flow rate — which is per minute?” is worth more than separate cards for each, because the exam tests the distinction rather than the terms.
4.Test both directions. Term to definition, and definition to term. The second is harder and closer to what the exam does.
5.Keep the back short. If you cannot say the answer aloud in one breath, the card is too big.
How to review them
The method matters as much as the cards.

Paper or an app?
Both work. Paper is faster to make, and the act of writing a card is itself useful revision. An app handles the spacing for you and travels in your pocket, which matters if your review time is a commute.
The honest answer is that the deck you actually use beats the deck that is theoretically better. If making cards has become a way of postponing studying, buy a deck instead and get on with it.

Copy these onto paper or into an app. They cover the terms and numbers most often tested. Add to them as you work through the domains — the cards you write yourself, for the things that caught you out, are worth more than any of these.

When to start
Not on day one. Cards work best on material you have already met once, so start them in week two of a four-week plan, after you have worked through the heaviest domains. Then keep them going daily to the exam.

Frequently asked questions
Are flashcards enough to pass the LEED Green Associate exam?
No. They are excellent for vocabulary, numbers and confusable pairs. Many questions instead describe a situation and ask you to apply a concept to it, and no flashcard teaches that.
Should I make my own flashcards or buy a deck?
Making them is better, because writing a card in your own words forces you to understand it first. Buying a deck is better than not using cards at all, especially if making them has become a way of postponing study.
How many flashcards do I need?
Fewer than you think. A focused set covering the confusable pairs, the key definitions and the numbers is worth more than several hundred cards you review too rarely to remember.
How often should I review them?
Five minutes on most days, sorted into piles by how well you knew each card, rather than a long session once a week.
