USGBC names four references used to build the LEED v5 Green Associate exam, and requires none of them. There is no compulsory book, no official course and no material you must buy. What you genuinely need is one current source that covers all eight knowledge domains, and a large supply of practice questions. Everything else is preference.
The four references USGBC names
The candidate handbook lists the resources used to develop the exam. Candidates are, in the handbook’s own words, “encouraged to review these references when preparing for the exam” — encouraged, not required.

Notice what is not on that list: the LEED Reference Guide for BD+C or any other specialty. It is a large, expensive document written for project teams documenting real buildings, and it is not a Green Associate study text. We answer that question in full in do you need the USGBC reference guide.
USGBC’s optional study products
Separately from the references, USGBC sells study material. None of it is required, and none of it guarantees anything — USGBC makes no such claim.

These are competently made and written by the organisation that sets the exam, which is a genuine advantage. They are also not the only route, and buying all of them is not better than working properly through one.
What you actually need
Strip it back and the requirement is short.

That is the whole list. Buying a fifth resource is one of the most common forms of procrastination in exam preparation, because it feels like progress and costs nothing but the time you were going to spend studying.
The one thing that matters more than which material you choose
Check it says v5.
The rating system moved, and so did the exam built on it. Some answers that were correct under LEED v4 are not correct now, and the balance of the syllabus shifted. The format changed too — every question now has exactly one correct answer.
That last point is a useful test you can apply in thirty seconds. Open any practice question set you are considering. If it contains multiple-response questions, it is out of date, and so, probably, is the rest of it.

What to be careful with
- “Real exam questions” or “exam dumps”. Genuine questions are protected by a non-disclosure agreement that every candidate signs. Anything sold as real exam content is either fabricated or obtained in breach of that agreement, and relying on it is both a bad bet and a genuine risk to your credential.
- Free question banks with no version stated. If nobody will tell you which version it was written for, assume the older one.
- Guarantees. No provider, including USGBC, guarantees a pass, and nobody publishes a pass rate to substantiate a claim about one.
- Buying more instead of practising more. The most common form of procrastination in exam preparation is shopping.
A workable free stack
If you would rather spend nothing, this works:
1.Work through the eight domain guides, starting at LEED Process, weighted by how many questions each carries.
2.Test yourself with the practice question sets after each domain.
3.Drill the glossary and the numbers cheat sheet daily.
4.Rehearse with the 50-question mock exam, timed.
5.Follow the four-week study plan to sequence it.
All of that is free, all of it is written to LEED v5, and it covers the four requirements above. What it does not give you is someone to ask when something does not make sense — which for some people is the whole value of a course, and for others is not needed at all.
