Registering is a two-part process with two different organisations. You register and pay with GBCI, which issues you an eligibility ID. You then use that ID to schedule your appointment with Prometric, who deliver the exam. Most of the confusion around booking comes from not realising these are separate steps.

Before you start: are you eligible?

The formal requirements are light. There is no prerequisite credential, no degree requirement and no experience requirement for the LEED Green Associate. You need to agree to the Disciplinary and Exam Appeals Policy and to the credential maintenance requirements. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must contact GBCI to complete a parental consent form.

GBCI does recommend exposure to LEED and green building concepts beforehand — through a course, volunteering or work — but that is advice, not a gate. Anyone can register.

Step 1 — Get your USGBC account in order

Log into your existing USGBC account or create one. Then do the thing that matters more than anything else on this page:

Check that your first and last name match your government-issued ID exactly. Exactly. If your ID says Mohammed and your account says Mohd, or your ID carries a middle name your account does not, fix it now.

Two specifics catch people out. Names must be entered in Roman characters. And special characters are not accepted — accents, tildes, umlauts, cedillas. If your legal name carries them, enter the Roman-character form and make sure the ID you bring shows your name in Roman characters too.

This is the single most common reason candidates are turned away at check-in, and it is unrecoverable on the day. The test centre cannot make an exception, and a mismatch means a forfeited fee and a wasted morning.

Step 2 — Register and pay with GBCI

Select the LEED Green Associate exam and complete the registration application. Payment is made to GBCI at this point, separately from any training you may have bought. Fees and the discounts that reduce them are on our LEED Green Associate exam cost page.

Step 3 — Receive your eligibility ID

Once registration and payment are complete, GBCI issues you a unique eligibility ID (EID). This is the key that lets you book with Prometric, and nothing can be scheduled without it.

Your EID is valid for 12 months from the date of registration. Within that window you must schedule and sit the exam. If the window closes unused, the registration is forfeited — you have paid for an exam you cannot now take.

Two safety valves are worth knowing about before you need them. You may request a one-time courtesy extension of six months, but you have to request it before the eligibility period expires. And you can request a refund within 12 months of registering, provided you have no appointment scheduled with Prometric.

The practical advice: do not register until you intend to study. Paying early does not motivate most people, and a year passes faster than it sounds.

Step 4 — Schedule with Prometric

Go to prometric.com/gbci with your EID and choose between two delivery methods:

You will receive an automated confirmation email. Keep it. One small trap: Prometric lists appointment times using AM and PM notation, so check carefully that the 9:00 you booked is the one you meant.

If you are going the remote route, download ProProctor at least a week before your exam and run Prometric’s system readiness check. Discovering an equipment problem on the morning is not a recoverable situation, and remote proctoring has real constraints: laptop or desktop only, no tablets, no dual monitors, no Bluetooth headsets, and an Ethernet cable is strongly preferable to wi-fi. Step 5 — Prepare, then sit it

Testing accommodations

Accommodations are available and there is no additional charge for them. Tick the accommodation box during registration, then complete both the Candidate Form and the Provider Form, the second requiring documentation from your healthcare provider, and email them to GBCI’s accommodations address given in the handbook.

Each request is evaluated individually, so start the process early rather than close to a date you have already booked.

Rescheduling and cancelling

Plans change, and the cost of changing them rises sharply as the date approaches. Moving your appointment well in advance is free; inside the final few days it is not permitted at all, and failing to appear forfeits the whole registration fee. Build a buffer into your date for this reason. Booking the exam for the week of a project deadline is how people end up paying twice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a qualification or experience to register?
