Which ISO 14001 Requirements Relate to Waste?

There is no single waste clause. This guide maps where waste appears from clause 4 to clause 10, and what an auditor asks at each step.

3FOLD Training is a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner (ATP 6039853) · Licensed by KHDA, Dubai

In this guide
  1. Where does waste appear in the standard?
  2. What do clauses 4 and 5 ask?
  3. What do the planning clauses ask?
  4. What do the support clauses ask?
  5. What do the operation clauses ask?
  6. What do evaluation and improvement ask?
  7. How do you use the map in an audit?
  8. Waste clauses simulation
  9. FAQs

People often search the standard for the word waste and find very little. That is because ISO 14001 manages waste through its general requirements rather than through one waste clause. Once waste is identified as an environmental aspect, nearly every part of the standard applies to it. This guide walks through the standard clause by clause and shows where waste fits, so you can plan an environmental management system (EMS) or an audit. It is for managers and for those preparing for the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course. Always check the exact wording in the current standard.

Quick answer

ISO 14001 has no waste-specific clause. Waste is covered when the organization identifies it as an environmental aspect (clause 6.1.2) and then applies the rest of the standard: compliance obligations (6.1.3), objectives (6.2), competence, communication and documented information (clause 7), operational control and emergency preparedness (8.1 and 8.2), monitoring, internal audit and management review (clause 9) and corrective action and improvement (clause 10).

Where does waste appear in the structure of ISO 14001?

It appears wherever the organization plans, controls, checks and improves its significant aspects.

The easiest way to see this is as a chain. Waste is identified as an aspect, it is linked to legal and other obligations, it gets objectives and controls, and it is monitored, audited and improved. Our guide to ISO 14001 waste management requirements goes into the day-to-day controls, and our guide on how ISO 14001 helps an organization reduce waste shows the improvement side.

What do clauses 4 and 5 ask about waste?

They ask the organization to understand its context and top management to commit to protecting the environment.

ClauseWhat it asksWaste example
4.1 ContextUnderstand issues that affect the EMSRising disposal pressure or local waste rules
4.2 Interested partiesUnderstand needs and expectationsNeighbors, regulators and customers who care about waste
5.2 Environmental policyCommit to protect the environment, including prevention of pollution, and to fulfil compliance obligationsA policy that supports waste prevention and compliance
5.3 Roles and responsibilitiesAssign and communicate responsibilitiesA named owner for each waste stream

Our guide to what an ISO 14001 environmental management system is explains the structure behind these clauses.

What do the planning clauses 6.1 and 6.2 ask about waste?

They ask the organization to identify waste aspects, know its obligations and set objectives.

  • 6.1.2 Environmental aspects. Identify waste streams and impacts and decide which are significant, from a life cycle perspective.
  • 6.1.3 Compliance obligations. Determine the waste rules and other requirements that apply and how they apply.
  • 6.1.4 Planning action. Plan actions to address significant aspects, obligations, and risks and opportunities.
  • 6.2 Objectives. Set measurable objectives, such as less waste sent to disposal, where it is relevant.

Our guide to environmental aspects and impacts in ISO 14001:2026 explains how waste is evaluated, and our guide on how ISO 14001 deals with legal requirements on waste covers clause 6.1.3.

There is no waste clause because waste runs through every clause that touches a significant aspect.

What do the support clauses in clause 7 ask about waste?

They ask for competent people, awareness, communication and controlled records.

ClauseWhat it asksWaste example

7.3 AwarenessPeople know the policy and their contributionWorkers know why segregation matters

What do the operation clauses 8.1 and 8.2 ask about waste?

They ask for controlled operations, controlled contractors and preparation for emergencies such as spills.

Clause 8.1 asks the organization to establish, implement and control the processes needed to meet requirements, to control or influence outsourced processes and to consider a life cycle perspective. It also asks for information about potential significant impacts during transport, use, end-of-life treatment and final disposal where relevant. Clause 8.2 asks for preparation for potential emergency situations, which can include waste spills or fires. Our guide to operational control in ISO 14001:2026 and our guide to life cycle thinking in ISO 14001:2026 give more detail.

What do evaluation and improvement in clauses 9 and 10 ask about waste?

They ask the organization to monitor, check compliance, audit, review and correct.

  1. 9.1 Monitoring. Measure waste performance and analyze the results.
  2. 9.1.2 Evaluation of compliance. Check compliance with waste obligations and keep evidence.
  3. 9.2 Internal audit. Audit the EMS, including its waste controls.
  4. 9.3 Management review. Top management reviews waste performance and compliance.
  5. 10.2 and 10.3. Correct nonconformities and improve continually.

Our guide to ISO 14001 compliance evaluation, our guide to management review in ISO 14001:2026 and our guide to ISO 14001 nonconformity and corrective action cover these clauses in depth.

How do you use the waste clause map in an audit?

Follow one waste stream through the chain, from aspect to improvement.

Pick a waste stream and trace it. Ask where it appears in the aspects register, which obligations apply, what objective or control exists, who is trained, how it is monitored and what happened at the last audit and management review. A break in the chain is a lead to follow, and you confirm it with a record or observation before you raise a finding. ISO 14001:2026 is Edition 4 and replaces the 2015 edition. According to the CQI and IRCA summary of key updates, it adds planning of changes (6.3) and risks and opportunities (6.1.4), makes minor changes to compliance obligations (6.1.3) and strengthens the life cycle perspective, so update your map. Our guide to what is ISO 14001:2026 and our ISO 14001:2026 transition training page cover the changes, and our guide to internal audit in ISO 14001:2026 shows how to run the audit.

Waste clauses simulation: choose the best auditor action

For practice only. Read each situation and choose the best response. These scenarios were written by 3FOLD Training and are not real exam questions or legal advice.

Situation 1. A site has a waste procedure, but waste does not appear in its aspects register. What is the best action?
Model answer: ISO 14001 has no waste clause, so waste is managed through aspects and the controls linked to them. Ask how waste streams were identified, evaluated for significance and connected to the control.
Situation 2. The environmental policy mentions protecting the environment but not pollution prevention. What do you do next?
Model answer: Clause 5.2 asks for commitments that include protection of the environment, including prevention of pollution, and to fulfil compliance obligations. Compare the wording and ask how it was set.
Situation 3. Waste contractors are used for collection, but the EMS has no control over them. What is the best action?
Model answer: Clause 8.1 asks the organization to ensure that outsourced processes are controlled or influenced. Ask how contractors are selected, checked and monitored.
Situation 4. Drums of liquid waste are stored with no spill plan. What is the best action?
Model answer: Clause 8.2 asks the organization to prepare for and respond to potential emergency situations, which can include spills. Ask for the plan, the training and any tests.
Situation 5. The monitoring plan has waste volumes, but nobody reviews them. What is the best action?
Model answer: Clause 9.1 asks the organization to monitor, measure, analyze and evaluate its environmental performance, and clause 9.3 asks for management review. Look for evidence that the numbers are used.

1 scenario answered: 1 of 1 correct

Preloaded example: Situation 1 is already answered. ISO 14001 has no waste clause, so waste runs through the aspects.
