Ten questions that catch out candidates who have done the reading. Each one turns on a pair of ideas that sound alike and are not. The explanations take apart every option, not just the right one — because on this exam the marks are lost to the tempting wrong answer, not the obviously wrong one.
Work through all ten before checking the explanations. If you get eight or more, your weakness is probably pace rather than knowledge.

The pattern behind all ten
Every question in this set is built around a pair of concepts that candidates commonly confuse.
| Concept 1 | Concept 2 |
|---|---|
| Certification — buildings | Accreditation or credentials — people |
| Prerequisite — mandatory, no points | Credit — optional, scores points |
| Native — occurs locally | Adapted — thrives locally |
| Embodied carbon — building it | Operational carbon — running it |
| Flush rate — per use, fixtures | Flow rate — per minute, fittings |
| Heat island — reflectivity, vegetation, shade | Light pollution — shielding, warmth, control |
| On-site renewables — generated here | Renewable energy certificates — funded elsewhere |
| ASHRAE 62.1 — ventilation and IAQ | ASHRAE 55 — thermal comfort |
Learn each row as a pair rather than as two separate facts. Half-remembering one half of a pair is what produces a confidently wrong answer, and confidently wrong is expensive.
Concepts these questions test
- LEED certification levels — Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum
- LEED certification versus accreditation — buildings versus people
- Sustainable Sites — adapted plants, heat island and light pollution
- Materials and Resources — embodied and operational carbon
- Water Efficiency — flow rates and flush rates
- Integrative Process — why early-stage decisions matter
Frequently asked questions
Are these questions harder than the real exam?
They are pitched at the harder end of what the exam asks. Each one turns on a distinction the exam genuinely tests rather than on obscure detail.
How many answers do I select per question?
One. Under LEED v5 every multiple-choice question has exactly one correct answer option.
What score here means I am ready?
Eight or more out of ten suggests your knowledge is sound and pace is the remaining variable. Fewer than six suggests specific gaps worth rebuilding before you book.
Where do candidates most often lose marks?
On confusable pairs — certification against accreditation, embodied against operational carbon, flush rate against flow rate, and ASHRAE 62.1 against ASHRAE 55.
