The route from your first look at the standard to a course certificate and, with audit experience, an IRCA auditor grade, step by step.
3FOLD Training is a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner (ATP 6039853) · Licensed by KHDA, Dubai
If you want to become a certified ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, the route is clear once you separate two ideas that are often mixed up: the course certificate and the IRCA auditor grade. The first comes from passing a CQI IRCA certified course. The second is a membership grade that you earn by adding audit experience. This guide sets out the steps in order, so you know what to do now and what comes later. It is for professionals working with or around environmental management systems (EMS) who are considering the route set by the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors). Always check the current requirements with CQI and IRCA.
To become a certified ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, learn the basics of ISO 14001, choose a CQI IRCA approved course, attend the 40 hours, pass the exam and receive your Certificate of Achievement. After that, build audit experience, keep an audit log and apply to IRCA for an auditor grade when you meet the requirements. The course is the training step, and the grade is a separate application that depends on audit experience.

What does certified mean for an ISO 14001 Lead Auditor?
It can mean the course certificate or the IRCA auditor grade, and they are different things.
| What people mean | What it is | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Course certificate | A Certificate of Achievement from an approved course | Attend the course and pass the exam |
| IRCA auditor grade | A grade of IRCA membership, such as Lead Auditor | Training plus audit experience, applied for separately |
The course gives you the certificate. Audit experience earns you the grade.
We prepare you for the exam; CQI and IRCA examine and certify. Our guide to how to apply for CQI IRCA auditor grade membership covers the application.

What is the route to certification at a glance?
Seven steps, from learning the basics to applying for a grade.
- Learn the basics of ISO 14001 and environmental management.
- Choose an approved course from a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner.
- Attend the full course and take part in the sessions.
- Pass the exam.
- Receive your Certificate of Achievement.
- Build audit experience and keep an audit log.
- Apply for an IRCA grade when you meet the requirements.
Steps 1 and 2: how do you learn the basics and choose a course?
Learn the standard first, then pick an approved course that fits your time.
The Lead Auditor course is an auditing skills course, not an introduction to the standard, so arrive with a basic understanding of ISO 14001 and environmental management. Our guide to what an ISO 14001 environmental management system is and our guide to what is ISO 14001:2026 are good places to start. When you choose a course, check that the provider is a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner and that the course is a CQI IRCA certified course. Our guide to the eligibility for the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course explains who can join.
Steps 3 and 4: how do you train and pass the exam?
Attend all 40 hours, practice with the mock exams, then sit the exam.
- Attend every session. The audit method builds from one session to the next. Our guide on how long the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course is helps you plan.
- Practice. Use the audit working documents, the case study and the mock exams on the learning management system (LMS).
- Sit the exam. According to the 3FOLD Training course page, it is open book, with 40 questions and 80 marks over 1 hour 45 minutes, plus extra time if English is not your first language.
- Test yourself. Try our ISO 14001 MCQ questions and answers for practice.
Step 5: what do you receive when you pass?
You receive a Certificate of Achievement, which is what you need to apply for an IRCA grade.
A Certificate of Achievement is different from a Certificate of Attendance, which shows only that you attended. The first CQI and IRCA exam attempt is included in the course. Keep your certificate safe, because you will need it for your grade application. If you already hold a CQI and IRCA ISO 14001:2015 course certificate, the course page says you may not need to repeat the full 40 hours and points to transition training, so see our ISO 14001:2026 transition training page.

Steps 6 and 7: how do you build experience and apply for a grade?
Carry out audits, record them in an audit log, and apply when you meet the CQI and IRCA requirements.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Take part in audits | Join internal or external audits as an auditor, using your training |
| Keep an audit log | Record each audit, its dates, your role and the standard audited |
| Lead audits | Build experience as audit team leader for the Lead Auditor grade |
| Apply to IRCA | Submit your certificate, your audit log and other evidence |
Each grade has its own requirements for approved training, audit experience, audit duration and evidence, so check the current rules with CQI and IRCA before you apply. Our guide to how to conduct an ISO 14001 internal audit and our guide to the responsibilities of an ISO lead auditor help you prepare for the role.
What slows people down on the route?
Skipping the basics, missing sessions and not recording audits.
- Skipping the basics. The course moves quickly if you do not know the standard.
- Missing sessions. Each session builds on the last.
- Confusing the certificate and the grade. The course does not give you the grade by itself.
- Not logging audits. Experience that is not recorded is hard to prove.
- Using the old edition. ISO 14001:2026 is Edition 4 and replaces the 2015 edition, so train on the current one.
