Is online live training enough for the PMP® exam? Commitment matters more than the format
A personal view from the team that taught the course in the classroom and then online. It is not about the mode. It is about your commitment, how fully you use the materials and how actively you take part.
In this guide
As a product manager, I have handled the 3FOLD PMP course for many years. 3FOLD has taught and supported learners in a physical classroom, and we have done the same online, so I can speak about both. People often ask me whether live online training is enough to prepare for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. My honest answer is that it is not about the mode of training. It is about how committed you are, and how well the training is built. Here is what I have learned, and what PMI says.
Quick answer
Yes, online live training can be enough as the structure of your PMP preparation, if it comes from a provider approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and you do your part. PMI says live instructor-led training, virtual or in person, counts toward the 35-hour requirement when it is delivered through approved pathways. Choose by accreditation, official materials, trainer quality, practice and support, not by the room. Then commit: the more fully you use the materials and the more actively you take part, the more guidance you receive and the more confidence you build. No format guarantees a pass.
| Training requirement | 35 hours of project management training, or an active CAPM |
| Does live online count? | Yes, when delivered through approved pathways such as a PMI Authorized Training Partner |
| Rule for live classes | From 1 Dec 2026, live classes must come from approved providers; self-paced courses can come from any provider |
| What to check | Accreditation, official materials, trainer, ECO alignment, practice, support |
| Exam format | 180 questions (170 scored), 240 minutes |
Is online live training enough to study for the PMP exam?
It is enough as the backbone of your preparation, not as the whole of it.
A good live course gives you the 35 hours, a qualified trainer, a clear order of topics and a place to ask questions. It cannot do the practice for you. You still need to work through the official materials, sit full-length mock exams and review every answer. That is true whether the class is online or in a room. The format is not what makes a candidate ready. The training, and the candidate’s commitment, are.
The same course can give two learners very different results. The learner who attends, asks questions, completes every quiz and uses every material is guided more, understands more and gains confidence week by week. The learner who only listens gets less out of the identical sessions. Commitment is the part you control.

Does online live training compromise the quality?
Not when the provider is approved and the training is built for the exam.
PMI’s own pages are clear on format. PMI says that, from 1 December 2026, live instructor-led PMP training, virtual or in person, counts toward your application when it is delivered through approved pathways: PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs), China-specific Registered Education Providers and eligible accredited universities. PMI also says its Authorized Training Partners deliver in in-person, virtual and hybrid formats, using PMI-developed content that maps to the Exam Content Outline (ECO), with instructors who hold the PMP and complete a PMI trainer course. What makes PMP training effective, online or physical?
Six factors decide it, and none of them is the room.
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Accreditation | Is the provider a PMI Authorized Training Partner, and will your hours count? |
| Official materials | Do you receive the official PMI course materials aligned to the ECO? |
| Trainer | Is the trainer PMI-authorized, qualified and familiar with the ECO? |
| Practice | Are there quizzes and full-length mock exams with explanations? |
| Support | Can you get help with questions and the exam application between sessions? |
| Consistency | Does the provider run batches reliably, so your schedule is not at risk? |

Our story: from the classroom to live online
We started in the classroom, and moved to live online when the lockdown came.
When COVID closed classrooms, we shifted the course to virtual live training, and we are one of the institutes that did not stop operations. We kept the same standards: we are a PMI Authorized Training Partner, we follow PMI’s rules, and we teach with the official PMI course materials and a PMI-authorized trainer who knows the Exam Content Outline (ECO) well. I am proud to say that our learners’ passing percentage after moving online is as high as it was before. We cannot guarantee any individual result, because that depends on each learner’s effort, but the quality of the training did not drop.
Online live also let us reach aspirants from other countries and from outside the UAE, which we could not do in a room. We stay competitive, and we want more people to benefit. Distance does not limit how we guide or support our learners. See our illustrated activation guide and the PMP course modules for 2026, and read about the new PMP exam materials for 2026. We run the training every month, and our learners recommend us to colleagues and friends.
When might a physical class suit you better?
We respect learners who prefer to study in person, and online live is not the right choice for everyone. A classroom may suit you better if you focus best away from home, if you want face-to-face time with the trainer and classmates, or if your connection or study space is unreliable. If you choose a physical class, apply the same checks: an approved provider, official materials, a qualified trainer, practice and support. If you choose online live, the same rule applies to you: your commitment decides the result.

How do you get the most from online live training?
Commit to the training, use every material you are given and take part actively. The more you take part, the more you are guided, the clearer the exam becomes and the more confident you feel.
| Material | How to make the most of it |
|---|---|
| Live sessions | Attend, join discussions and ask questions as they arise |
| Official PMI course materials | Work through the lessons and keep notes against the ECO tasks |
| LMS videos and quizzes | Watch for mastery and finish each quiz after its lesson |
| Recordings | Revisit topics that felt unclear |
| Mock exams | Sit them timed, then review every answer |
| Trainer and support team | Ask early, and raise any problem with the team |
- Attend every session. Each Sunday builds on the last, so one missed session leaves a gap.
- Take part. Join discussions, exercises and case studies, because they show how scenario questions work.
- Ask your trainer when something is unclear and raise any problem with the team early.
- Complete the quiz after each lesson while the content is fresh.
- Work through the official PMI materials and the recordings between sessions.
- Sit full-length mock exams after the training and review every answer.

Frequently asked questions
Is online live training enough to prepare for the PMP exam?
Online live training is enough as the structure of your preparation if it comes from the right provider and you do your part. It gives you the 35 hours of training and a trainer, but you still need to study the official materials, sit full-length mock exams and review your mistakes. No format, online or physical, can guarantee that you pass the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam.
Does online live PMP training count for the 35 hours?
Yes, when it is delivered by an approved provider. The Project Management Institute (PMI) says live instructor-led training, virtual or in person, counts toward the 35 hours for the Project Management Professional (PMP) application when it comes through approved pathways, such as a PMI Authorized Training Partner. Confirm the details on PMI’s page before you enrol.
Is online live training as good as classroom training?
Quality depends on the training, not the room. A Project Management Institute (PMI) Authorized Training Partner uses PMI-developed training that maps to the Exam Content Outline (ECO), and PMI says its partners deliver in in-person, virtual and hybrid formats. What matters is the trainer, the materials, the practice and how you take part.
What should you look for in an online live PMP course?
Check that the provider is a Project Management Institute (PMI) Authorized Training Partner, that you receive the official PMI course materials, that the trainer is PMI-authorized and knows the Exam Content Outline (ECO), and that the course includes mock exams, recordings and support. Ask how often batches run and how learners get help between sessions.
What is the difference between a PMI Authorized Training Partner and other providers?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) vets and approves Authorized Training Partners to deliver official instructor-led Project Management Professional (PMP) training. Their courses use PMI-developed content, and their instructors hold the PMP and complete a PMI trainer course. From 1 December 2026, live classes must come through approved pathways to count toward the 35 hours.
How do you get the most from online live PMP training?
Commit to the training and use every material you are given. Attend every session, keep your camera and microphone ready to take part, complete the quiz after each lesson, ask your trainer questions and keep your study time protected. After the live sessions, sit full-length mock exams and review every answer. The training gives you structure and guidance. Your commitment, practice and analysis decide how ready and how confident you are.
Can you ask the trainer questions in online live classes?
Yes, in a live class you can ask questions and join discussions, exercises and case studies as the session runs. Asking early matters, because each lesson builds on the last. If you miss a session, tell your training provider quickly so that you can catch up with the recordings and support.
Who should choose a physical class instead of online live?
Learners who focus best away from home, want face-to-face time with the trainer and classmates, or have an unreliable connection or study space may prefer a physical class. Both formats can work when the provider is a Project Management Institute (PMI) Authorized Training Partner and the learner is committed. Choose the setting in which you will take part most actively.
Will 3FOLD guarantee that I pass the PMP exam?
No. 3FOLD Training prepares you for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, and the Project Management Institute (PMI) examines and certifies. Our training is delivered live online by a PMI Authorized Training Partner with official PMI course materials, mock exams and support, and includes one year of free retraining on the same exam version.
