How to Pass the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam: Practical Tips, Time Plan and Marks Map
Where the marks are, how to pace 40 questions, what to do in the last week and what to do if you need a second attempt.
In this guide
Most people who fail the CQI IRCA exam do not fail for lack of knowledge. They run short of time in one part of the paper, lose marks in a domain they ignored, or click past a question they could not return to.
The tips below are built around how the exam is actually marked, so you can spend your study time where the marks are. They come from the exam framework CQI and IRCA publish for Lead Auditor courses and from what 3FOLD Training, a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner, sees in its ISO 9001 Lead Auditor classes.
Quick answer
To pass the CQI IRCA ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam you need 40 of 80 marks and the minimum mark in each of the five domains. Study hardest for Domains 4 and 5, which carry 56 of the 80 marks, practise on timed mock exams, spend your time in proportion to the marks, and answer every question before you press Next, because you cannot go back.
| Biggest mark source | Domain 4, Conducting the audit: 36 of 80 marks |
| Pass rule | 40 marks overall and every domain minimum |
| Open book? | Yes, your course notes are allowed |
| Going back? | No. Once you press Next, that question is closed |
| Extra time | 30 minutes if English is not your first language |
Where are the marks in the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam?
Every strategy starts with the mark scheme. Domains 1 to 3 are short and worth 8 marks each, while Domain 4 alone is worth 36 and Domain 5 is worth 20. That means 70% of the paper rewards your ability to carry out and close an audit, not to recite definitions.
| Domain | Marks | Minimum mark | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Concepts and principles | 8 | 3 | Quick wins if you know the vocabulary |
| 2. Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities | 8 | 3 | Know who does what in an audit |
| 3. Planning the audit | 8 | 3 | Sampling, checklists, audit plan |
| 4. Conducting the audit | 36 | 14 | Largest block, built on scenarios |
| 5. Reporting and closing out | 20 | 8 | Findings, reports, follow-up, also scenarios |

Tips for the weeks before the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam
- Treat the class as part of the exam. Take part in every audit exercise and homework task rather than watching. You also have to pass the continuous assessment your trainer marks, so these activities count twice.
- Ask your questions early. If a stage of the audit is unclear in class, raise it that day. It is much harder to fix a gap alone in the final week.
- Weight your revision. Give roughly two thirds of your revision time to Domains 4 and 5, then use the rest to make sure each short domain clears its minimum.
- Do the mock exams against the clock. The course mock papers show the question styles. Sit one without notes first, then one the way you will in the real exam, and mark where you lost time.
- Get used to the question types. Expect multiple choice, multiple response, fill in the blanks, matching and sequencing. The demo portal CQI provides lets you practise the screen layout before the day.
- Prepare your notes, not a library. The exam is open book, but flipping through pages costs minutes. Make a one-page summary of each stage of the audit and tab it by domain.
- Check your setup a few days ahead. Run the system, camera and microphone checks on the same laptop and connection you will use. The full rules are in our guide to the CQI IRCA ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam online.
ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam time planner
CQI suggests a time for each domain. Choose your exam length to see a pacing plan you can write on a sticky note before you start.
| Domain | Time to spend |
|---|---|
| 1. Concepts and principles | 10 min |
| 2. Audit concepts and responsibilities | 10 min |
| 3. Planning the audit | 10 min |
| 4. Conducting the audit | 45 min |
| 5. Reporting and closing out | 30 min |
| Total | 105 min |
That works out at about 1.3 minutes per mark.
The extra-time column is a proportional scale-up of CQI’s suggested times, so treat it as a pacing guide rather than an official schedule.
Tips for ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam day
- Read each question twice. Multiple-response questions hide marks in the words “all” and “which two”, and a rushed read loses them.
- Answer before you press Next. The exam does not let you return, so give your best answer first and do not leave a question for later.
- Think like the lead auditor in scenario questions. In Domains 4 and 5 you judge a situation. Choose the action a lead auditor would take, which is usually to gather more evidence or follow the audit plan, not to jump to a conclusion.
- Use your notes sparingly. They are a safety net for a detail you cannot recall, not a substitute for knowing the process. Searching the internet is not allowed.
- Watch the clock at each domain boundary. If you are behind, speed up on the short domains rather than rushing Domain 4.
- Take your one break wisely. You may take a single 10-minute break through the Take a break button. A quick reset before Domain 4 or 5 can be worth the time.
- Do not skip a short domain. Missing the minimum in a domain worth 8 marks can fail an otherwise strong paper.

What if you need a second attempt at the ISO 9001 Lead Auditor exam?
A first result that falls short is not the end. At 3FOLD the first exam attempt is included in your course fee, and a second attempt costs US $35 without having to attend the course again. Before you resit, review where you lost marks: a weak domain usually points to the exact lesson to revisit.
Only the Certificate of Achievement counts towards IRCA auditor grades. If you do not pass and do not resit, you receive a Certificate of Attendance instead. Pass, and your digital Certificate of Achievement arrives within 48 hours.
