Materials and Resources is worth 13 of the 85 scored questions on the LEED AP BD+C exam, and it rises from 11 on the Green Associate paper. There are 13 questions below, one for each scored question this domain carries. The embodied carbon prerequisite requires you to quantify and assess. It requires no reduction whatsoever. The 20% cut belongs to the credit next to it, and is also one of the four Platinum mandates. Candidates fuse the two constantly.
It covers Planning for Zero Waste Operations, Quantify and Assess Embodied Carbon, Building and Materials Reuse, Reduce Embodied Carbon, Low-Emitting Materials, Building Product Selection and Procurement, and Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion.
Two things dominate the errors here: confusing the embodied carbon prerequisite, which requires no reduction at all, with the credit that does; and the product selection calculation, where the denominator is every product in the category.

Recall, Application, Analysis — and why it matters here
The candidate handbook names three cognitive levels: Recall, Application and Analysis. It publishes no split between them, so nobody can tell you what share of your paper will be which. What we can tell you is that only the first is fixed by more reading. Past a point, re-reading the material stops helping and worked problems start.
Each answer in this set is tagged with the level it was written at, so you can see which kind you are losing. If your errors cluster in Recall, revise. If they cluster in Application and Analysis, do more questions — those are the only thing that moves them.

Where candidates lose marks in this domain
- Treating organics as optional when no local hauler exists. Storage space is still required and organics may not be commingled with the other recycling streams.
- Confusing hazardous waste with the six recycling streams. Items such as mercury-containing lamps sit under separate hazardous-material handling requirements.
- Assuming the embodied carbon prerequisite requires a reduction. It requires quantification and assessment, not a percentage cut.
- Using a cradle-to-grave boundary for the prerequisite. The prerequisite assessment uses A1–A3 for the required materials.
- Stopping after producing the bill of materials. The team must also identify the three biggest embodied carbon sources and strategies considered.
- Giving salvaged material zero impact across every life-cycle stage. Reused material receives zero A1–A3 impact, but other relevant stages still count.
- Leaving structurally unsound area in the building reuse denominator. Qualifying excluded area comes out of the calculation.
- Ignoring off-site reused structural and enclosure material. It can contribute to the reuse numerator.
- Counting off-site salvage under both reuse and waste diversion. The same material does not earn both.
- Assuming every retained envelope component counts. Window assemblies are excluded from the reused-area calculation described here.
- Averaging Low-Emitting Materials categories together. The required gate categories must each satisfy their own threshold.
- Treating basic CARB compliance as sufficient for composite wood. The credit requires the specified formaldehyde certification route.
- Dropping nonqualifying products from the product-selection denominator. Every product in the category remains in the denominator.
- Comparing source-separated tonnage with total waste instead of diverted waste. The higher diversion tier uses the share of the diverted material.
- Accepting an unverified mixed-waste facility's advertised recovery rate. The allowed rate is limited when third-party verification is absent.
- Confusing the prerequisite with the embodied carbon reduction credit. The 20% reduction belongs to the credit, not the prerequisite.

The topics overlap, but the depth is different. The specialty paper asks you to apply embodied carbon boundaries, reuse calculations, product-selection formulas, low-emitting material thresholds and waste-diversion rules rather than simply recognise the concepts.
