Is the CMQ/OE® worth it for managers in the Gulf and India?
A practical way to decide: whether you qualify, where you will actually sit the exam, and how to test demand in your own job market before you invest.
ASQ exam preparation · Licensed by KHDA, Dubai
If you manage quality, operations or projects in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha, Mumbai or Bengaluru, the question is not whether the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE®) from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) is a respected credential. The question is whether it pays back your evenings, your travel and your exam day in your market. This article settles three things: whether you qualify, where you will sit the exam from the Gulf or India, and how to test demand before you commit.
The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) is worth pursuing for Gulf and India-based managers who already hold decision-making authority, because ASQ requires 10 years of experience with 5 in a decision-making position, and the program is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under ISO 17024. ASQ states that Live Remote Proctoring is not available in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, so candidates there test at a Prometric test center. Candidates in India can choose a Prometric center in 8 listed cities or remote proctoring. Demand varies by employer, so check your own job market before you commit.

| Exam time | 4 hours 18 minutes, within a 4.5-hour appointment |

Who gets the most value from the CMQ/OE in the Gulf and India?
The CMQ/OE suits managers who already own outcomes, because ASQ built the eligibility rule around authority and responsibility rather than a Quality job title. ASQ defines a decision-making position as having authority to define, execute or control projects or processes and being responsible for the outcome, with or without management duties. The work must be full-time and paid.
In practice, that describes a plant manager in Jubail, a project director in Abu Dhabi, a supply chain head in Pune or a head of training in Doha as readily as a quality manager. ASQ also lets experience used for another ASQ certification count toward the 10 years, as long as you reach the 10-year minimum.
How do education waivers change the 10 years?
A waiver reduces the total experience you need, and ASQ allows only one waiver to be claimed. A bachelor’s degree, for example, waives 4 years. We read the 5 decision-making years as staying in place, so confirm that with ASQ if you plan to rely on a waiver.
| Education | Years waived | Total experience then needed |
|---|---|---|
| Technical or trade school diploma | 1 | 9 |
| Associate degree | 2 | 8 |
| Bachelor’s degree | 4 | 6 |
| Master’s or doctorate | 5 | 5 |

Do Gulf and Indian employers value the CMQ/OE?
Some do and some do not, and ASQ’s pages give no pay or holder figures by country, so you have to test it in your own market. What ASQ does state is that the program is accredited by ANAB under ISO 17024, the international standard for bodies that certify people, and that ASQ has members and customers in more than 130 countries. That is a credible foundation. It is not proof that your next employer will ask for it.
A 15-minute market test
- Read 10 current postings for the role you want, in your city and sector.
- Note what they ask for. Count how many name ASQ, CMQ/OE or a quality-management certification.
- Ask one person. Your HR team, a hiring manager or a client can tell you what they would accept.
- Check tender and prequalification rules if you work for a contractor, supplier or consultancy.
- Compare alternatives. If postings ask for another credential more often, weigh that honestly.
If two or three of those steps point to the CMQ/OE, the investment is easier to justify. If none do, you may be better served by a different credential for now. You can read the credential’s own description on the official ASQ CMQ/OE page.
A credential is worth what your own job market will pay for it, so test the market first.
Where do you actually sit the CMQ/OE exam in the Gulf and India?
If you are in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar, you sit the exam at a Prometric test center, and if you are in India you can choose a Prometric center or remote proctoring. ASQ states that Live Remote Proctoring is currently not available in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan. Check the current list on the ASQ computer-based testing page on the day you apply, because it can change.
| Where you are | Exam route | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar | Prometric test center only | Search Prometric by city, then schedule early |
| India | Prometric center or remote proctoring | Eight cities are listed (below), or test from home or office |
| Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman | Not named by ASQ | Not on the unavailable list; confirm remote availability at booking |
| Pakistan, China | Prometric test center only | Remote proctoring is listed as unavailable |
Which Indian cities have a Prometric center?
ASQ India lists eight Prometric centers for ASQ exams: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Gurgaon and Thiruvananthapuram. The full list is on ASQ India’s exam locations page. ASQ’s page does not name Gulf test center cities, so use the Prometric locator on the ASQ test sponsor page and search by your city.
Why should you choose your exam country carefully?
ASQ states that changing the selected country after you apply is not permitted. If you split your time between the Gulf and India, decide where you will sit the exam before you submit. ASQ also says seating is not guaranteed, so schedule as soon as you receive your eligibility details. Our guide to CMQ/OE exam dates and scheduling walks through the application steps, and our remote-proctored exam checklist covers the room and ID rules for candidates who qualify for the remote option.

What does a test-center exam day involve?
Expect a full day, because ASQ gives you a 4.5-hour appointment for a 4 hour 18 minute exam, and in-person candidates must arrive 30 minutes before the appointment for check-in. The exam has 180 multiple-choice questions, of which 165 are scored and 15 are unscored.
Every ASQ exam is open-book, and ASQ requires reference materials to be bound and to stay bound during the exam. Hand-stapled materials and loose notes are not allowed. ASQ allows Post-it tabs only if you attach them before you enter the test center, so tab your books at home. Candidates in the Gulf should also plan travel time, because ASQ lists no city-level center information for the region.
Preparation matters more than the setting. The 2026 Body of Knowledge brought changes that our CMQ/OE 2026 exam changes article explains, and our explainer on CMQ/OE exam result verification shows what happens after you sit the exam.
How should you decide whether the CMQ/OE is worth it for you?
Decide on three tests in order: eligibility, market demand and logistics. If you fail the first, build experience before you spend anything. If the second is weak, look at other credentials. If the third is the only obstacle, it is solvable, because both the Gulf and India have clear routes to a test center.
The checker below combines the three tests in a few seconds. It uses the rules in this article and is meant for planning, not for a final answer.
Is it worth it for you? Try the route and fit checker
CMQ/OE® route and fit checker
For planning only. This tool is not an ASQ or Prometric product, and ASQ makes the final eligibility decision.
The checker opens with an example manager in the UAE: 11 total years, 6 in decision-making, no waiver. That manager qualifies and has two of three fit points, so the result is “Worth pursuing”, and the unticked point reminds them to plan a full day at a test center because remote proctoring is not offered in the UAE.

The same option applies to the ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) exam. Remote sessions follow ASQ's room, ID and bound-materials rules, so read them before you choose this route.

ASQ's computer-based testing page does not mention Bahrain, Kuwait or Oman, and these countries are not on its list where Live Remote Proctoring is unavailable.
