LEED Green Associate Exam Format

August 25, 2026 Posted by 3FOLD Exam Process, LEED, LEED GA No comments

The LEED Green Associate exam is 100 multiple-choice questions in a 2-hour period. Every question has exactly one correct answer. It is scored on a scale from 125 to 200, and you need 170 to pass. Allow 2 hours 20 minutes in total for the appointment, because check-in, the tutorial and the closing survey sit outside the two hours of testing.

The structure, item by item

Correct answers per questionOne. Always one

Pass mark170
Where you sit itA Prometric test centre, or at home with remote proctoring

That works out at 1 minute 12 seconds per question if you spread the time evenly. In practice you will answer most questions in well under a minute and bank time for the handful that need thinking about.

Six tiles showing the LEED Green Associate exam format: 100 questions, 2 hours, one correct answer each, scored 125 to 200, 170 to pass

Every question has one right answer

This matters more than it sounds, because it is a change. Earlier versions of the LEED exams included multiple-response items — the “choose the best three of six” format that candidates found hardest and that most third-party practice material still drills.

Under LEED v5 that format is gone. The candidate handbook is explicit: each multiple-choice question will only have one correct answer option. If a practice resource is still giving you “select all that apply” questions, it was written for an earlier version of the exam, and that tells you something about the rest of its content too.

Practically, this simplifies your technique. There is always exactly one defensible answer, so elimination works cleanly: rule out what is wrong and what remains is right. You never have to judge whether a fourth option is “also correct enough”.

Scored and unscored questions

Not all 100 questions count. The exam contains both scored and unscored questions, the unscored ones being new items GBCI is trialling for future exams. They are placed randomly throughout the exam and you are not told which is which.

Two consequences worth taking seriously. First, you cannot game it — treat every question as if it counts, because you have no way of knowing. Second, if a question strikes you as strange, badly worded or about something you are certain was not in the syllabus, it may well be an unscored trial item. Do not let it rattle you. Answer it, flag it if you like, and move on. Candidates lose more marks to the ten minutes they spend brooding over one odd question than they ever lose to the question itself.

How the scoring actually works

Your result is not a percentage. GBCI takes your raw score — the number of questions you got right — and maps it onto a standardised scale running from 125 to 200, with the minimum competency threshold always landing on 170.

The reason for scaling is fairness across exam versions. Different candidates see different sets of questions, and no two sets are identical in difficulty. Scaling adjusts for that, so a slightly harder set does not require a higher standard than an easier one. The bar is the same for everyone even though the questions are not.

What this means in practice: 170 is not 85%, and there is no published number of questions you must answer correctly. Anyone telling you “you need to get 60 right” is guessing. The full picture is on our LEED Green Associate passing score page.

What you can do inside the exam

The interface is more forgiving than most candidates expect. You can change your answers, skip questions, and flag questions for later review. Nothing is locked in until you submit.

That makes one strategy clearly correct: never leave a question unanswered, and never stall on a hard one. There is no negative marking, so a guess costs nothing and might gain a mark. Answer, flag, move on, and come back with whatever time remains. Candidates who work through in strict order and refuse to move past anything they cannot solve are the ones who run out of time with fifteen questions untouched.

What is not in the two hours

The appointment is longer than the exam. Around the 2 hours of testing you also have a non-disclosure agreement to accept, a short tutorial covering how the interface works, and a survey at the end. None of that eats into your testing time, but it is why you should plan for 2 hours 20 minutes rather than two.

The full sequence is on our LEED Green Associate exam day page.

What the exam covers

USGBC publishes an exam specification allocating the 85 scored questions across eight knowledge domains. That is the single most useful piece of information for planning revision, because it tells you where your time is worth most.

Note the number: 85, not 100. The specification covers the scored questions only. The other 15 are the unscored trial items described above, and because they are placed at random you cannot know which domain they came from — so revise as though all 100 count, and use the table to decide where the hours go.

DomainQuestions
LEED Process15
Energy and Atmosphere15
Materials and Resources11
Indoor Environmental Quality11
Water Efficiency10
Location and Transportation9
Sustainable Sites8
Integrative Process, Planning and Assessments6

The top four domains are 52 of the 85 scored questions between them — well over half. If revision time is short, that is where it goes.

Where you sit it

You have two options and they are equivalent in difficulty, format and scoring. A Prometric test centre gives you a controlled environment and someone else’s equipment to worry about. Remote proctoring lets you sit at your own desk, with a stricter set of rules about your room, your screen and staying in view of the webcam throughout.

Neither is easier. Choose on temperament and logistics: whether you concentrate better at home or away from it, and whether your internet connection is something you would stake two hours on.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the LEED Green Associate exam?
100 multiple-choice questions, delivered in a 2-hour period.

Does the LEED Green Associate exam have multiple-response questions?
No. Under LEED v5 each multiple-choice question has only one correct answer option. The choose-the-best-three format used in earlier versions no longer appears.

Is the LEED Green Associate exam open book?
No. It is closed book. You cannot bring notes, printed material or the reference guide.

Can I go back and change my answers?
Yes. You can change answers, skip questions and flag them for review at any point before you submit.

How long should I allow for the appointment?
2 hours 20 minutes. The exam itself is 2 hours; the rest covers the agreement, the tutorial and the closing survey.

Preparing for the format

Knowing the shape of the exam is worth little until you have sat one. Our 50-question mock exam is free and timed. 3FOLD TRAINING covers all eight domains in LEED Green Associate training, written to LEED v5 — ask us through the course enquiry form.
