A student who wants to learn LEED can follow a simple journey, from the first questions to the first credential and beyond. This article sets out four stages, what to do in each and how to plan the next step. It uses the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook, the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook and the USGBC LEED v5 exam information page. It does not state job outcomes, salaries, exam eligibility rules, pass rates, passing scores or fees, so check the official USGBC and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) pages for those details.
Quick answer
The journey has four stages. First learn what LEED is, then build the foundation with the LEED Green Associate handbook, then prepare and sit the exam, then plan what comes next. USGBC states that the Green Associate exam is based on LEED v5. A training certificate is not a credential, and this article does not promise jobs or outcomes. Check the official USGBC and GBCI pages for current details.

| What is not here | Job outcomes, salaries, eligibility rules, pass rates, passing scores and fees |
| Key rule | Check the official USGBC and GBCI pages for current details |
What is the LEED student journey?
It is a path of four stages, from first learning to what comes after the exam.
Each stage builds on the one before it, so you can start at the stage that matches where you are now. Our guide on LEED certification for students and our guide on LEED for students before graduation cover the wider picture. The table below summarizes six points students ask about most.
| Question | Answer | Source or note |
|---|---|---|
| What is the student journey? | Four stages, from first learning to what comes after the exam | Journey stages |
| Where does it start? | With what LEED is and who runs it | USGBC and GBCI |
| Which credential is the usual first? | LEED Green Associate, based on LEED v5 | USGBC exam information |
| How many domains are in the handbook? | Eight | USGBC candidate handbook |
| Is a course certificate a credential? | No, the credential is earned through the exam | USGBC and GBCI |
| Which 3FOLD course lengths apply? | GA 14, AP BD+C 21, combined 35 hours | 3FOLD Training |

Stage 1: How do you learn the basics?
Start with what LEED is, who developed it and who runs the exams.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. USGBC developed LEED, and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers LEED certification for projects and the LEED credential exams for people. People hold credentials, while buildings and projects are certified. Our guide on what LEED stands for and our guide on LEED concepts for beginners are good places to start.
Want to learn the basics with a trainer?
Check the Green Associate course page and the next batch.
Stage 2: How do you build the foundation?
Use the handbook as a study map and take the eight domains one at a time.
- LEED Process and Integrative Process, Planning, and Assessments: how a project approaches LEED.
- Location and Transportation, and Sustainable Sites: where a project sits and how the site is managed.
- Water Efficiency, and Energy and Atmosphere: how a building uses water and energy.
- Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality: what a building is made of and how it feels inside.
The LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook lists all eight domains, and our LEED Green Associate syllabus guide walks through them. Add LEED Green Associate practice questions after each domain, because the handbook says the exam assesses Recall, Application and Analysis.
Stage 3: How do you prepare and sit the exam?
Plan short regular sessions, practise, and check the rules before you book.
Compare options using our guide on LEED training course versus self-study. Eligibility and registration rules are set by USGBC and GBCI and this article does not state them, so see our guide on LEED Green Associate eligibility before you apply and our guide on how to register for the LEED Green Associate exam. A training certificate from a course is not a credential, and our guide on the difference between a LEED training certificate and a credential explains why. On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED Green Associate course runs 14 hours, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours and the combined path runs 35 hours. The courses are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.
What comes after the exam?
Plan to keep the credential and decide whether to look at a specialty.
USGBC states that LEED Green Associate holders are qualified for the LEED AP with Specialty exam, so some people look at the LEED AP BD+C next. On the USGBC support page, the LEED Green Associate needs 15 continuing education hours, including 3 LEED-specific, and the LEED AP needs 30 hours, including 6 LEED-specific, on two-year cycles. Check the USGBC page for current details, and see our guide on the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C career path and our guide on how LEED recertification works.

Frequently asked questions
What is the LEED student journey?
The LEED student journey is a simple path from learning what LEED is, to building the LEED Green Associate foundations, to preparing for the exam and planning what comes next. This article does not promise jobs or outcomes.
When should a student start learning LEED?
A student can start learning LEED at any point in a degree, and the first step is to read about what LEED is and how the LEED process works. Check the USGBC and GBCI pages for current requirements before you plan an exam.
What does LEED stand for?
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. USGBC developed LEED, and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers LEED certification for projects and the LEED credential exams for people.
Which LEED credential should a student start with?
The LEED Green Associate is the foundation LEED credential, and USGBC states that its exam is based on LEED v5. It covers the core concepts of green building and the LEED process.
What should a student learn first about LEED?
Start with what LEED is, who runs it and how the LEED process works, then take the eight LEED domains in the handbook one at a time. The LEED Green Associate handbook lists the domains from the LEED process to Indoor Environmental Quality.
Can a student study LEED alongside a degree?
Many candidates study LEED alongside other commitments, so plan short regular sessions around your timetable. On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED Green Associate course runs 14 hours.
Do students need to check LEED eligibility rules?
Yes. Eligibility and registration rules for the LEED exams are set by USGBC and GBCI, and this article does not state them. Check the LEED handbook and the official pages before you plan a booking.
Is a LEED training certificate the same as a LEED credential?
No. A training certificate shows you completed a LEED course, while a LEED credential is earned through the exam administered by GBCI. Check the LEED handbook for how the credential is earned.
How should a student prepare for the LEED exam?
Read the LEED handbook, take the LEED domains one at a time and practise scenario questions after each. The handbook says the LEED exam assesses Recall, Application and Analysis, so practise applying ideas and not only memorizing them.
What comes after the LEED Green Associate for a student?
USGBC states that LEED Green Associate holders are qualified for the LEED AP with Specialty exam, so some people look at the LEED AP BD+C next. A LEED credential also needs continuing education on two-year cycles, so check the USGBC page.
Which 3FOLD Training LEED course lengths should a student know about?
On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED Green Associate course runs 14 hours, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours and the combined LEED path runs 35 hours. They are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.
