Why CMQ/OE® is not restricted to Quality job titles
ASQ’s Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence is a management-level credential built on decision-making experience, not on a job title.

Ten years into leading teams, processes or projects, you may wonder whether the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE®) from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) is only for people with “Quality” in their title. ASQ’s own rules answer that, and they describe a long-established, management-level credential.
The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) is a management-level credential for experienced professionals and is not restricted to Quality job titles. ASQ requires 10 years of experience in the CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge, including 5 years in a decision-making position, which may or may not include management or supervisory positions. The credential evolved from ASQ’s Certified Quality Manager program of 1995 and is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under the ISO 17024 standard.

Do you need a Quality job title to earn the CMQ/OE®?
No. ASQ sets the requirement by what you do, not by what your title says.
ASQ asks for 10 years of experience in the CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge (BoK), the published list of exam topics, including 5 years in a decision-making position. ASQ defines that as the authority to define, execute or control projects or processes and to be responsible for the outcome, and states that it “may or may not include management or supervisory positions”.
The test is whether you own results. An operations lead, project director, supply chain manager or head of training can each meet it. ASQ describes the holder as a professional who leads and champions process improvement across customers, strategy, people, finances and risk. See the official ASQ CMQ/OE page and the ASQ CMQ/OE fact sheet (PDF).

Do you meet the experience requirement? Try the checker
CMQ/OE® experience checker
For planning only. This is not an ASQ tool, and ASQ decides eligibility on your application.
The example, 9 years with a bachelor’s degree, meets the total but is 1 year short on decision-making: the degree reduces the 10 years, and this checker keeps the 5-year minimum.
CMQ/OE eligibility: frequently asked questions
Do I need a Quality job title to take the ASQ CMQ/OE exam?
No. The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) requires 10 years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of its Body of Knowledge, including 5 years in a decision-making position. ASQ states that a decision-making position may or may not include management or supervisory positions, so the requirement rests on your authority over projects or processes, not on your title.
What experience does the ASQ CMQ/OE certification require?
ASQ requires 10 years of full-time, paid, on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) Body of Knowledge. Does a degree reduce the experience requirement for the ASQ CMQ/OE exam?
Yes, in part. ASQ waives part of the 10-year requirement for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) when you have completed a degree or diploma: 1 year for a technical or trade school diploma, 2 years for an associate degree, 4 years for a bachelor's degree and 5 years for a master's degree or doctorate. Only one waiver may be claimed.
Is the ASQ CMQ/OE certification accredited?
Yes.
